The alpaca is native to South America and is a member of the camelid family. The camelid family includes the camel, the llama, the alpaca, the vicuna and the guanaco.
The alpaca is purchased mainly for breeding, herd growth and investment purposes. There are those, such as fiber artists, spinners and weavers, who purchase to have their own supply of this fabled fiber.
There are also people who purchase "pet" quality alpacas as they have found them so cute, amiable, curious, and, in general, fun to enjoy on small acreage.
