Coming on the heels of last season’s record-breaking number of international ski visitors, Colorado resorts — including Aspen — are targeting Asian markets for future growth.
Japan is the top foreign priority for Colorado Ski Country USA, according to Sue Baldwin, vice president of international business for the trade group. Korea and China — two other relatively untapped markets — are trailing closely behind.
Aspen Skiing Co. Senior Vice President David Perry said SkiCo is a party to Colorado Ski Country’s overtures in the Asian markets. Additionally, SkiCo has been showing its “Power of Four” film on Air China’s in-flight movie screens for the past two winters. The video has been translated into Chinese for that effort.
“China’s been experiencing massive economic growth and new ski resorts are being developed in China,” Perry said. “There’s an emerging upper middle class in China and they’re poised to become world travelers and destination skiers in the next decade.”
“Japan has long been considered a strong potential skier market,” he added. “It’s been a focus in the past. But the key to that is a direct nonstop flight from Japan to Denver. The Japanese are not very receptive to a three-stop air route.”
Colorado Ski Country USA officials say they are working closely with Denver International Airport to add more nonstop global flights. The upcoming debut of a Lufthansa flight between DIA and Munich, Germany, this spring is considered a significant boon for the state’s international market, and Asia could be next.
